How to have a hassle-free picnic!

The sun is out and you should be out too! It’s summertime, which means it’s the perfect time for going on picnics with friends and family. Having a picnic may seem pretty fun, but actually preparing for the picnic can cause a slight headache. Here are a few tips on how you can have a hassle free picnic with the help of Chef Abod Cafe!

Where to go

The best place to have a picnic is in a grassy area that has level ground. Some great spots around Halifax include Point Pleasant Park, Chocolate Lake Park, Emera Oval and Citadel Hill. Some other great spots can include local beaches and parks. When thinking of a place to have your picnic, be mindful of the public bathroom facilities nearby.

What to pack

If you’ve never had a picnic before, you may be wondering where you should start. There are a few things that are a MUST to help you have a great experience:

  1. Picnic Blanket - If you’re going somewhere that doesn’t have picnic benches, pack a blanket large enough to hold you and your food items

  2. Cooler/Thermal Bag - These help with keeping your drinks and food cool through the summer heat

  3. Entertainment - This can come in the form of a good book (if you’re by yourself) or a card game and frisbee if you’re in a group.

Be sure to pack some garbage bags to carry all your waste with you when you leave. Remember to only take pictures and leave footprints!

What to eat

Now on to the most important part of the picnic - the food and drinks! It’s important to always keep hydrated while in the summer sun. Throw a few bottles of water in the freezer, so you can have cool water throughout the entire day. These can also help to keep the items in your cooler/thermal bag cool. Here’s the kind of foods that are ideal for a picnic:

  • Fruits - Fresh fruits are one of the best snacks to bring on your picnic. They not only keep you hydrated, but they are delicious! Some of the fruits that are great for picnics include watermelon, pineapples, mangos and strawberries.

  • Finger foods - No one wants to be at a picnic fighting with a fork and knife on a plate, which is why finger foods would be your best bet. Here at Chef Abod Cafe, we have a Special Appetizer Platter, wraps and sandwiches that are perfectly packed and ready to go for your picnic!

Want to really take your picnic to the next level? Bring some grilled kebabs for you to enjoy! We have a great selection of kebabs on our menu. You can choose from freshly prepared or order them frozen for you to cook on your own.
